Classes with Sayon - 8/2011

Kulu-Ba

Kulu-Ba is a West African phrase loosely translated as “Big Thunder” and is the name of the Resounding Rhythms performance troupe.  We formed Kulu-Ba as a response to a need in the Midcoast Maine area for a coalesced group that regularly played West African music at local events.  Kulu-Ba plays arrangements of popular “folk” West African rhythms, as well as rhythms we have learned directly from West African masters.

Kulu-Ba is available for public and private performance events as well as demonstrations for educational groups. We also donate a number of our performances to charity events throughout the year. Call or email us if you’d like us to perform for your group or function.

Peg Armstrong

Drumming is a source of joy and connection to the unseen mystery that nourishes my spirit. It is primitive, primal and playful. I have always been a dancer, moving with or without music, often tuning into sounds unheard. When I started drumming in a class with other students, I was mesmerized by the synergy, the beauty and the rich simplicity of the experience. Drumming makes me move and smile and nurtures a sense of well being. As a clinical social worker, Kulu-ba offers me the opportunity to connect with people in a non-verbal way, a wonderful change of pace! As a yoga/meditation teacher, it gets me out of my little mind, and provides another path to infinite consciousness. Drumming is fun and honest and challenging, qualities that I aspire to bring into my life every day.

Barbara vanBok

From Bath, Maine
Co-Director of Kulu-Ba and Resounding Rhythms

Drumming was never originally in “the plan,” however, life takes so many different turns.

Dance has always been a passion from ballet to modern to Mid-Eastern. However without music, dance is not often inspired. Somewhere along the way, and with little nudges from important outside sources, my soul got the message. Drumming is natural, intrinsic and through it we find rhythm is truly all around us. Now, looking back, I can see perhaps it was always in “the larger plan.”

Thanks to my students who help me keep it fresh and have the tendency to teach me the most amazing things!

Patsy DuBois

From Topsham, Maine

Sometimes it takes a lifetime to participate in all the kinds of music one loves. So far I am doing pretty well. Over the years I have been a part of opera, oratorio, traditional, and various ethnic music activities, including an American Sign Language performance group. Each musical experience and community has taught me much, brought me joy and led me ever forward.  I have my daughter to thank for leading me to drumming- which I have loved all my life, but always felt I was too much of a klutz to pursue.  Taking her to lessons got me started.  The rest is history.

I live with my husband and daughter in Topsham, Maine and work as a special educator in the local middle school.

Drumming was something that I never planned on doing.  In fact, it was a single rhythm workshop that Barbara wanted me to attend, a workshop that I, in fact, never really wanted to attend in the first place, that actually hooked me on rhythm and drumming as a whole.  Shortly after that workshop I pushed for us to buy our first drums, and started pushing us to take regular classes.

When I left the corporate world, and we moved to Maine, we started our drumming school moslty to ensure we had a group of people to drum with on a regular basis.  Little did we know what an impact we would have on people in the community, and thus the community as a whole.  I truly feel blessed and look forward to many years of drumming within this community.

I love drumming.  I love teaching.  I love performing.  I am lucky to be playing on a regular basis with such great people, that share in my passion for the music.
